For a Polished Look, Set the Scene!
Neutralizing your backdrop provides the perfect base for splashes of color and statement pieces. Andrea loves the look of a painted black floor and cream walls. This type of neutral setting makes it easy to transform a room quickly and inexpensively just by switching around accessories, rugs, or pictures whenever the mood strikes you!
Dashes of Color Defeat the Dull and Dreary!
Of course you don’t want a fussy room, but many people tend to translate this fear into avoiding color. Andrea cautions that overly coordinated rooms where everything is the same shade of beige tend to look like dreary hotel lobbies! She reminds us that a room should reflect your character and spirit. A dash of color here and there is a great way to liven things up for less. Why not find a place on your couch for the bold, tangerine colored pillow you found at a flea market three years ago? It’s not brightening anyone’s day just sitting in storage!
Bring the Outside In!
Any room in your home will benefit from a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The trick is to stick with just one type of bloom – it has far more visual impact than a mixed bouquet. And your flowers don’t have to be pricey – a large bouquet of simple daisies can refresh a room just as well as ritzy roses can. Andrea likes to arrange them in the biggest and most unexpected container you can rummage up – she suggests searching your kitchen and garage for fabulous flower vessels. One of our Fab & Fru friends found a blue, enameled teapot in her basement that she had gotten as a wedding gift. She filled it with yellow flowers, and her home instantly felt like spring (plus her Aunt’s wedding gift is no longer going to waste)!
We were certainly inspired by Andrea’s approach to decorating, and hope you are too. Remember, just use what you’ve got and you won’t have to spend a lot!
