Straighten up!
Standing and sitting up straight makes your clothes look better and makes you look – and feel – more confident and secure. And I swear, it’s the best bra money can buy. At the end of the day, if you don’t look like you believe in yourself, why should others believe in you?!
Listen up!
It sounds obvious, but isn’t. Really pay attention and listen to what the interviewer is telling you – your future employer should get a strong sense of how interested you are in hearing what he or she has to say. This will not only make them feel that you are more interested in the job, it will accentuate your leadership and collaboration skills. In addition, it is important to ask intelligent questions to show the interviewer you have thought about this position and have been closely listening to their pearls of wisdom. The trick is to be thoughtful and inquisitive without jumping the gun and interrupting. Think of it as a blind date –you need to be intelligent, witty and charming, all while being a great listener and riveting question asker. Piece of cake!
Don’t chew gum!
We know, you think it would never happen –but it does…
Don’t wear perfume!
There is nothing more distracting than being overwhelmed by the scent of Obsession as you are trying to talk to someone about the details of their job duties. Though during some interviews when the candidates have been really dismal it has given me something to do – play the “Which perfume are they wearing?” game. In addition, many people are actually allergic to perfume so you may inadvertently be cutting your interview time short if your boss really can’t handle your wafting fragrance.
Thank-you!
A proper thank you for a job interview involves a pen and paper –you may be familiar with them, even in this age of cyber communications?? Set yourself apart! Of course sending an email is better than nothing, but it is average and you are not average! By taking the time to craft a handwritten well thought out thank you note, you will not only remind your interviewer who you are, you’ll show them what your made of!

Of course experience is key, but at the end of the day, people tend to hire people that they feel they made a connection with and whose personality they enjoy. After all, we spend more time with our co-workers than with our families or friends! I remember Jerry Seinfeld once talking about dating, and he joked something like he’d rather date nice, attractive people than unattractive, angry people– well duh! The same is true of hiring co-workers. We’d all probably rather surround ourselves with friendly, well-groomed, attentive people, wouldn’t we (or am I just as shallow as Jerry)? There is no extra money needed to show respect for others and yourself. All it takes is some extra thought and care to make a great first impression and land your dream job!
