Shocking Electric Bills!
Yet another silent wallet buster ….all those appliances you leave plugged in 24/7! Gregg points out that the average household has 25 appliances plugged in at one time – whether they are being used or not. There is a great name for all this waste: ENERGY VAMPIRES! And it is scary just how much energy and money we are all wasting without even thinking about it.
Gregg explained to me that when anything is plugged into a wall outlet or regular surge protector, it is still using electricity even if it is off- about 10% of what it uses if turned on! His solution? Buy a Smart Strip! For about $25 or so, this product can save you about $20 a month (per surge protector)! It automatically stops the electricity flow to appliances you don’t turn on often. And there are a few spaces on each model to plug in those items like DVRs that you do want to keep going all the time!
MAC Attack!
Gregg says he is constantly hearing complaints about how much more expensive MACs are than PCs. And, yes – that is true, in terms of upfront costs. But in Gergg’s experience, Macs last longer and retain their resale value much better than PCs do! In fact, he recently resold a Mac book pro that costs him $1800 2 years later – for $1400! He also points out that he would only advise spending money on a warranty for a Mac – not a PC – due to it’s longevity. Also, consider that in addition to resale value, you will likely spend less money on tech support for a Mac, and you don’t need to buy the same $100 anti-virus software for a Mac that is recommended for PCs…..SO if you can shoulder the upfront Mac costs, you will likely save money in the long run!
