Travel Tips For Big Trips

Plan Ahead but Remain Flexible

Gregor believes that only way to save on travel is to research and be prepared! No matter where you go in the world, when you only have a week or two to travel, you must PLAN AHEAD, tanzaniabut you also must remain open minded and leave room for flexibility. Things out of your control can change quickly, especially if you are traveling outside of the Western world.  You must expect the unexpected.  If your bus to town is five hours late or an enormous storm suddenly takes your itinerary hostage, what’s plan B so you still have a great time?  You must embrace the mindset that, unless you’re in harms’ way, there is no such thing as a disaster!

Set Up Camp At A Local Guest House or Boutique Hotel

Gregor and the guys at Global Basecamps believe that the best trips involve multiple stops, multiple environments and multiple experiences. Although most of us no longer have the time or the desire to rough it for a six months living out of a backpack, basecamping (finding a great lodge, hotel or guesthouse in a remote area to set up ‘camp’ and take day excursions from there) allows you to recreate the excitement and sense of discovery of travel in a shorter period of time, and if you do it right – with much less money than doing an expensive tour!

Gregor believes that part of having an unforgettable trip is meeting locals, experiencing some native culture and giving back to the community.  If you do it right, you can also save!  Avoid staying at all inclusive international hotels and resorts.  Of course there are stunning, locally run high-end lodges all over the world, but Gregor says that you can still enjoy a little bit of luxury at a third of the cost by staying in a local guest house or boutique hotel.  Find a great family run place that can help you organize your day trips and set up your own ‘comfort camp’ from there!

Never Skimp On Safety

Gregor says never be cheap when it comes to safety!  If you’re thinking of going on a safari or spending the day canoeing down the Amazon, don’t hire a questionable tour guide just to canoeingdowntheamazon save a few bucks.  Traveling off the beaten path can be unpredictable and quite dangerous.  The unpredictability is also what makes safari exciting, but make sure your tour guide comes recommended and that they are prepared and have proper communication devices to get help in case of emergency.

So get on it, and start PLANNING and SAVING NOW for your own Fab & Fru adventure!
