A Day Trip By Train

Learn Something New

Taking the train up the Hudson reminded me of the critical role that the river and the railroad played in the industrialization and growth of our country.  All the towns along the way were once thriving ports of industry and trade that lost it all.  However, many of them have reinvented themselves as destinations for the arts, small local farms that supply the finest restaurants in NYC, not to mention all the outdoor recreation.  What is the history that surrounds you?

Price It Out & Explore!

Although not all cities and towns harbor a bustling train system, those that have them are often under utilized.  Here on the East Coast, many people ride Amtrak to commute to near by Philadelphia, Washington DC and Boston.  However, it’s such a popular form of transit out here, that Amtrak is almost as expensive as flying.  But out in California, you can take a beautiful ride along the Pacific from San Diego to LA, for thirty-six bucks.  That train track goes all the way up the Coast to San Francisco and beyond!

A lot of our friends decided to skip the summer vacation this year, due to the less than cooperative economy…  If you’re anything like them, you may find yourself right now with the mid-summer blues.  Wondering if maybe you should’ve booked a getaway after all?  The good news is, you still can!  A get away on a train is an affordable adventure, and unlike plane tickets, last minute train tickets won’t break the bank.  As with so much of life, attitude makes all the difference.  Instead of being bummed out that Hawaii wasn’t in the cards this year, celebrate the spontaneous, open a local map, close your eyes, point and see where your local commuter rail can take you!
