Savvy Tips to Help You Save Big
When I bought my condo years ago, I inherited a Maytag refrigerator that – wait for it – is now almost 25 years! It’s nestled perfectly between the wall and the stove of my galley kitchen with just enough room under the cabinets and just enough space for the door to open without banging into the dishwasher. Luckily, to this day (knock on wood) old May works like a charm.
They Don’t Make ‘em Like They Used to
While they sure don’t make appliances like they used to, I know May’s days are numbered. For the last five years, every time I hear a hum or a hiss, I hold my breath thinking she must be on her final electrical surge, but then miraculously, she always seems to come back with steady force. My problem is, over the years while I’ve been hunting to replace my her, I’ve discovered that they no longer make refrigerators the same size. I must either do construction and move a wall in my kitchen, or I spend upwards of $5,000 to $6,000 on a European brand that will fit the space. Hence, I’ve opted to let old May work ’til her final hour….
The reality is, replacing large home appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, stove/ranges or your washer and dryer, costs BIG bucks. So, if you’re in the market, like I am, to start shopping for a new appliance, we have some Fab & Fru tips to help you SAVE upfront on your next purchase and for years to come!
Shop for Appliances in September & October
According to David Bakke from Money Crashers, the best time of year to buy most major appliances is in September and October. “These are the two months where most manufacturers are unveiling their latest models. This means that it’s time for the previous year’s models to be discounted and let go at bargain prices”.
Shop Around in Person & Online
We probably don’t have to remind you, but whenever you’re buying a high ticket item, ALWAYS comparison shop and the read reviews before making a final purchase. And to all you online deal surfers, when buying a major appliance, make sure you actually visit Home Depot, Lowes, or your local Mom & Pop shop before looking for the best deal online. Checking out the size and style in person is key! You might just be surprised at the deals you can make in the stores only…
Get a Deal on the Floor Model
If you find something that fits the bill, ask if the floor model is for sale. You can often save between 5-35% if you can put up with a little ding or the mere fact that it’s been in the showroom for awhile.
